Forest management

Why sustainable forest management must be remunerated

Sustainable forest management and forest use is cost-intensive, especially in difficult locations. However, it is necessary in order to secure the renewable raw material timber in the long term and to safeguard the climate impact of our forests.

The pilot project “Carbon removal credits for timber constructions” offers forest managers additional income from the carbon market for their climate-relevant forest services.

You can find more information about the pilot project here.

Timber construction

Why the climate performance of timber construction must be rewarded

Currently, timber construction, in combination with the sequestration performance in the forest and the transformation leadership of the timber construction industry, is one of the most scalable and quickly implementable negative emission technologies available in Switzerland. An accelerated timber construction strategy thanks to carbon removal credits makes it possible to transfer the previously unused annual growth of around 1.5 million m3 of logs to the construction industry.

The pilot project “Carbon removal credits for timber constructions” offers property developers additional financing for their climate performance and thus reduces the slightly higher costs of timber construction or the use of Swiss timber and hardwood. Another option is for property developers to have the carbon removal credits offset against their own carbon footprint (insetting).
