Enabling Mass Timber Carbon Removals
Building Carbon Assets for Real Estate
Turning buildings into carbon sink assets
Timber Construction - The scalable Carbon Removal Technology
Timber is by far the most efficient building material in terms of carbon emissions. And yet, for cost reasons, only 1% of all urban, multistory buildings worldwide are built with timber by institutional project developers. New instruments are needed to harness the climate potential of timber.
Timber construction is rapidly gaining importance in the context of the climate debate and is being recognized both in Switzerland and by the EU Commission, as well as by the UNFCCC and IPCC
as a Carbon Removal Solution Developments on the carbon markets open up the possibility for the real estate industry to be compensated and monetized for their climate performance – building with timber and managing the forest in a climate-relevant way. For the first time, removal buyers have the opportunity to invest in Timber Construction Carbon Removals.
Since 2022, we have been developing the world’s first methodology for timber construction according to an internationally recognized ICROA standard. Recognition is expected in Q1 2025. At parallel to this, the internationally valid methodology is already being adapted to regional conditions. To this end, the first pilots are being launched and certified in various regions.
