Research & Development
We connect practice, research, and policy to deliver high-quality Carbon Removals.
Carbon Removal Solutions in Timber Construction
Timber Finance is actively engaged in advancing scientific research on carbon removal solutions in timber construction. We serve as a bridge between science and industry, bringing practical application into research projects and translating scientific insights into market-ready solutions.
We are actively involved in research networks, standardization initiatives, and funding programs at both national and international levels.
As one of the leading experts in timber carbon removal, Timber Finance participates in the EU Commission’s technical expert group on carbon storage in long-lived products under the Carbon Removal and Carbon Farming Framework. We contribute expertise on timber-based carbon storage and take part in consultations and hearings at the EU level.
Under the leadership of Timber Finance and with the collaboration of an international 15-member working group from science, forestry and the timber industry, the world’s first methodology for carbon storage certificates for timber construction (Timber Carbon Removals) has been under development since 2022 under one of the high-qualityICROA Carbon Standard developed. The pilot phase for the first certifications of timber properties in combination with sustainable forest management (Swiss Finishing) takes place now in Switzerland, Germany and Austria.
Timber Finance partners with the Týr project as a strategic advisor, driving the implementation of EU methodology for Carbon Removals in timber construction.
The collaboration focuses on pioneering new approaches to carbon accounting and circular timber use, reinforcing the role of sustainable building as a climate solution. By establishing robust methodological foundations, the project lays the groundwork for advancing carbon removal credits and unlocking financial incentives for climate-positive construction practices.
The decarbonization of Swiss cities and regions is one of the challenges for net zero by 2050. DeCirra explores the questions of how cities and regions can be decarbonized and how local resources can be used optimally. Timber Finance is the practice partner responsible for the TCCS (Timber Carbon Capture & Storage) and biochar (PyCCS) specialist areas. Here you will find the interim report of the ZHAW led research group sub-project SP 3.
Other projects and platforms
We are also represented on a number of committees and organizations and take part in consultations and hearings in which we contribute our expertise on scaling carbon storage technologies in timber construction. These include Built by Nature, Supervisory Body UNFCCC Art. 6.4, Swiss Carbon Removal Platform and others.
