Currently, the seventh Swiss timber skyscraper is being planned: Implenia’s “Rocket and Tigerli”, which will be the world’s largest timber residential high-rise (32 floors, total height 100 meters). The project has received a lot of international attention(CNN, Time Out), as it is a shining example of the leading (Swiss) timber engineering.
- What stands out about the “Rocket and Tigerli”?
- It is the world’s highest ever planned residential high-rise made of timber – total height 100 meters, 32 floors with 255 residential units, 1.5 to 5.5 rooms
- The innovative use of timber
- The project is a “Timber Structure”. Meaning that both the vertical and horizontal loads are transferred exclusively by the timber frame structure. (20min).
- With this new system, the concrete core is replaced with timber, which results in lighter individual structural beams, allowing for a taller structure. (holzbauaustria.at)
- The innovative timber construction was developed by Implenia together with ETH Zurich and is specifically designed for high-rise buildings.
- Implenia as a timber builder
- An overview of Implenia’s latest timber buildings in Switzerland can be found in the Implenia Nachhaltigkeitsbericht 2021:
- The company built the country’s largest-ever timber-built housing project in Winterthur: 8,100 cubic metres of wood were used to make the 307 apartments in the “sue&til” development, and around 80% of this wood was sourced from Swiss forests.
- At the Lokstadt development, also in Winterthur, Implenia has built a wooden high-rise residential building known as “Krokodil”. Containing 254 apartments, some of them cooperatively owned, this building used 7,700 cubic meters of wood.
- The next big Implenia timber project is the “KIM” neighbourhood in Oberwinterthur. With the construction of this mixed-use residential and commercial building, with a total of 208 apartments, will require 5,500 cubic meters of wood.

- Implenia in the Timber Finance Index:
- Implenia was included in the Timber Finance Index as the largest Swiss timber construction company, a trendsetter and thanks to its dedicated timber construction strategy for large urban buildings.
- The Timber Finance Index is the world’s first index for the modern forest and timber industry. It includes 30 selected listed leading companies and innovators in timber construction from Europe and North America. The TFI Index has clearly outperformed the MSCI World and the S&P Timber & Forest Index since March 2020 as a result of sustained CO2 price increases and rising demand for timber construction.
- Our analysts adjust the index every six months. The rebalancing report from March 2022 can be found here.
