A new study shows that wildfires destroy almost all forest carbon offsets in 100-year reserve (Article in Financial Times available here: Financial Times (ft.com)
This is one of the reasons why we can’t continue measuring carbon uptake in the forest and, why we have to start to permanently store carbon in mass timber.
The current heatwave (we feel it in Europe and in many other parts of the world right now…) massively increases the risks of forest fires, not only in the US. And: Let’s not forget the damage the bark beetle has already done to European forests…
Is there a solution to this problem?
- Let’s make the forest as climate resistant as possible.
- Let’s find solutions to permanently contain the carbon stored in timber.
- Let’s start measuring carbon once it is permanently stored in timber buildings, not in forests.
- Mass Timber is a natural carbon dioxide removal (CDR) technology. Let’s use it.
